Republic Day Party

Socialite Nisha Jamwal is known to throw interesting theme parties. Her recent one had the Republic Day as its theme. As is usual with most theme parties, not everyone gets into it, but those who do - do a great job. To get a flavor of how some people at the party dressed - here are some pics:

The Hostess. I am a little disappointed with her choice, I wish she had picked something more in tune with the theme.

Something more like what Mandira Bedi is wearing. I think she did a fantastic job. What do you think?

I think this couple here (dunno their names) played into theme real well too. Very cute.

Ameesha Patel's mom. A bit OTT don't you think - but in the theme nonetheless.

I really like the way the lady in the center has dressed. White pants, green top and and coral earrings. Very classy, very elegant and still staying in the theme.

Of the shoulder

Mugdha Godse was wearing this CK at the book release of Ashish Jaiswal's True Dummy.
White has always been my fav color so right off the bat this one started on a positive note. Sheer chudidars have been around for a while now - this one has work on it along with edging of green beads, like the kurta, to give the pajeb effect. Not bad. What is really bothering me about this outfit is that she has laid the dupatta on one shoulder. It kinda negates the effect of an off shoulder kurta. Also the dupatta is the same as material as the chudidar. Too matchy matchy for me. A plain white dupatta would have been fine. Over all I would give this look a 5/10.

It's Freida again

Freida Pinto is all over the place these days. Smart girl, she is cashing in on the success of Slumdog. She has got herself an agent, a stylist etc. Let's rule out the choices in Mumbai as an exception.

Here is a picture of her at the Producers Guild Awards

It is great to see these young girls experimenting with color. Instead of sticking with the tried and tested and they are choosing newer options. I really like how this nude color jersey Donna Karan gown makes Freida's skin glow. Teamed with Lorraine Schwartz jewels she makes one striking picture.

Ambani Hospital

It is a relief to see Ash wearing a chudidar kurta (CK) that is not white or in pastel shades. It was getting very boring and insipid. The magenta color of the CK she wore to the opening of the new Ambani Hospital looks good on her. Keep it up.

Back to Earth

What a difference a flop makes. Here is a picture of the stars from the disaster called CC2C. Akshay and Deepika were the guests at the SaReGaMa Finale. Gone are the blingy, loud and off the wall outfits. They are both dressed very simply and actually look good.

Premier of Raaz

Kangana has also been a risk taker ( and I am just talking fashion). Her looks don't always work but hey I give her credit for trying. I am on the fence with this one. It looks kinda Flintstone-y to me. What do you think?

There is no raaz here at all that these two need a stylist desperately.

Hello, it is a movie premier you are attending. Soha Ali Khan looks like she is headed out for some grocery shopping and Aryaman (??) Suman - he is wearing a pink cravat/scarf. What's up with that? Akshay was wearing one at the CC2C premier too. It's great that these men are experimenting with color but somehow it ain't flying.

Oh no Freida

One of my readers just forwarded this picture to me. It appeared in Midday

It read

Will someone please teach our girls how to wear minis and not flash their inners a la Britney Spears? It's possible, you know. Freida Pinto flashed more than her smile at the press meet of Slumdog Millionaire at Imax Big at Wadala.

Elegance....

I think I am well on my way to becoming an ardent admirer of Sonam's sense of style. I like how she is familiar with the trends, with the labels and is not afraid to use them to best suit her. Take a look at her picture from last week's 54th Filmfare Awards Press Conference in New Delhi.

I like the beige/cream belted dress ( many Indian women shy away from wearing this color as they are afraid it may make them look washed out), the subtle make up and the hair pulled back into a pony tail look. Also, I love the Marc Jacobs Stam bag she is carrying.

Also she is not wearing any earrings. Ladies, it is ok to not wear earrings with some outfits, it actually looks real good. Breath easy - it is just naked earlobes.

I would love to hear what you think of her look. Leave me a comment.

Slumdog does it again

The Slumdog Millionaire cast won the award for Best Cast in a motion picture. All the 3 guys looked real dapper in their suits and Freida looked beautiful in a blue Marchesa gown.

Seeing Double

Jiah Khan wore a red dress to the Slumdog Premier. For some reason that dress looked awfully familiar. Did not know why - now I do. Check my coverage on the many CC2C premiers. I think Deepika wore the same dress.

Wonder who the designer is? Does not matter - still don't like it.

My Pet Peeve

Matchy Matchy couples. Abhiash are notorious for doing that. Matching jeans and white shirt combos or matching jeans and leather jackets - come on. And now it is Suzanne and Hritik Roshan.

Matching their jeans with black blazers. Inspite of that bright red shirt - guys so NOT CUTE. Grow up

Slumdog Millionaire Premier in Mumbai

One of my readers emailed me saying that I should do a Fashion Hit or Miss of the evening for every major event. Thanks for the suggestion, I really like it. So I will start with the Mumbai premier of Slumdog.

HITS

The numero uno Hit of the evening was definitely the cast and crew of Slumdog Millionaire.

Its Black and White. Sonam Kapoor and Vidya Balan are both rocking their outfits. I like Sonam's sequinned black ensemble, make up and hair. Vidya has not looked this good in a long time. Kudos for staying simple, elegant and graceful.

I like this dress on Genelia and more so the fact that she used the big bright red clutch as contrast. Very sweet.

Seeing pics of Ness and Preity together after a long time ( guess they are still together). Yes another B&W combo. But I like. Very elegant and classy just wish she had added a pop of color either in accessories or shoes or clutch.

I like Sonia Mehra's sense of style and defi this dress . She has the body and attitude to carry this Bebe outfit off.

This blue is defi the color of the season (Freida, Sonia and Shruti are all wearing it). It is also gorgeous in a maxi (Tabu wore the color as a maxi at the Screen awards)

MISSES

I like the fact that Freida wore Indian for the Mumbai premier, just think the ensemble and especially the color are really bad. Very dissapointing.

Yes that bright blue again but this time in its over bright avtaar and teamed with that ghastly green - this outfit is too "chatak"

Once voted the best dresser in Bollywood, Sushmita really has been dissapointing her fans of late. Dunno what to make of her crumpled aluminium foil (looking) dress.

I said it earlier and will say it again - you can have all the money, label and stylist in the world but it still will not buy you good taste. Logoed belt, cuff , bag - terrible. Extreme case of over accessorizing.

Yes, I saved the best for the last. Just look at the duo. I rest my case.

the others....

Ok so after the CC2C here were the other noteworthy (or not ) dressers of the evening

So here is Arbaaz Khan with his bibi Malaika and saali Amrita. Malaika is in dressed in her typical style - a gown with thigh high slits and plunging necklace, ho hum. I like Amrita's dress and the booties. I just don't know if I like them together and on her.

I love Sonia Mehra's ( late actor Vinod Mehra's daughter) sense of style. She is not afraid of taking risks, plays with styles and color and is never insipid. I love ther red offshoulder dress on her. It is bright, young and fun.

Now for the socialites - man..... you can have all the money in the world, all the labels and designers at your feet - but you just can buy style. Tell me if I am wrong....

Sheetal Maftalal. Yes you are wearing a Versace dress, but what's with the bling - armlet, shoulder lenght earrings, blingy clutch and shoes. ewwwwwwwwwwwww

I like Nawaz Singhania's dress but you don't team a dress like that with silver Kolhapuri wedges and a grey batua purse

Arti and Kailash Sundernath are a made for each other couple. They are both always so off the wall - they leave everyone speechless.

I love the color of Queenie Dhody's dress and like the emerald and diamond jewelry, I just do not like the "chatak (bright)" gold of her clutch.

Geetanjali Lifestyle Luxury Style Fest 2009

Yes, there is an award ceremony that doles out awards to the most Stylish people in India - be it movie stars, TV stars, models or socialites. I really do wish they would publish the criteria they use to select their winners. Let's start with the stars who were at this function.

I know, I know. It is them again - they seem to be everywhere. I seriously thought about not including them but could not do so as I had to mention that Akshay Kumar was awarded the Most Stylish movie star of the year award...... Unbelievable is it not??? Hence the earlier question about the criteria.

Usually I avoid plaid like plague but surprise, surprise I actually like Twinkle's dress but most of all I love her clutch. I think it is a Jimmy Choo. Let me know if it is by another designer.

Now for Akshay's costar in the established disaster called CC2C Deepika. She has started a new trend. She is wearing a long sleeve knee length kurta with knee high tights and a belt. What do you think? I dunno about this one

Show Stoppers

It is a given that almost all designers look to Bollywood for a showstopper for their fashion shows. There is nothing wrong with that as it helps draw bigger crowds and publicize the event. But can any and everyone walk the ramp. But is there no criteria to it - should they not have the height, figure, look etc to be a model? I guess not - take a look

Sonali Kulkarni was a showstopper at Wendell Rodricks fashion show

Vidya Balan was the show stopper for Ritu Beri (BTW - cannot believe this monstrosity was desgined by Ritu)

Trust me, I have nothing against these women, they are beautiful and very talented artists but they are really not ramp models and definitely not show stoppers.

Plain Jane err.. Karisma

I have been watching the reality dance show Nach Baliye only to see what Karisma Kapoor is wearing. To put it mildly, I am dissapointed - she is playing it too safe. She has been wearing some real boring chudidar kurtas. ( I have seen occasional bright flashes). Even in the picture below - she looks good but again is going with a tried and tested look and color.

Karisma has maintained herself very nicely post marriage and child. She should take a page out of her sister Kareena's book and take some fashion risks - Girl you have everything going for you - go for it.

Slumdog Crew in Mumbai

The Slumdog Millionaire crew is now in Mumbai gearing up for its opening there this weekend. I have liked all the fashion choices made in US by Freida Pinto (with help from her stylist, ofcourse) but am unsure about this top she picked for Mumbai. She looks great but the top is a little busy and am not crazy about the neckline. What do you think?

All wrong

Either it is her posture or it is the dress, I am not sure, but Nisha Jamval looks preggers in this pic. I like the color of the dress and that is where it ends. Starting with the posture, going on to the insipid color stole with the pompoms to the big artifical flower in the hair to the blinged out cat pin to the uninspiring shoes - it is all too much and wrong. It is a big lesson to all of us to what NOT to do.

Repeat

It is good to know that stars repeat outfits just like we do. The faux pas they sometimes make (see the comment one reader made about Akshay at Nokia Awards) is that they repeat outfits too soon. You cannot do that especially when you are watched and captured on film as often as most of our stars.

Priety wore this top two days ago at the Gitanjali Party. I distinctly remembered her wearing this top earlier ( because I really liked it) while returning/going to Elizabeth Hurley and Arun Nayar's wedding in Rajasthan in Jan 2007 - exactly 2 years ago.

At the Gitanjali Launch Party

Going to the Nayar wedding

Do you think this top is still trendy? Let me know what you think...

Dissapointed

I am a huge fan of Malaika Arora. I give her a lot of credit for how she has maintained her career and figure post marriage and kids. I also give her a lot more credit for the guts she has to wear and carry off the outfits that she usually wears.

Of late, however, she has not been making great choices. Take a look:

There is something called dressing age appropriately. Here I don't think the dress suits her and absolutely do not like her purse. Malaika what happened??? Also take a look here - so not cool girl..............

You like?

Sonam Kapoor was invited as a guest on the Indian Idol 4 show. As can be seen in the picture she is definitely trying to promote her new movie Delhi 6 by wearing this salwaar kameez with jhoomkas and jootis. What do you think? Do you like it?

Personally, I love the colors, bright and fun. The colors together are very funky and I love how they look together, BUT, yes there is a but, it is not an outfit many of us can pull off.

Reason being, the kurta is short and flared (has a lot of kalis). Unless you are extremely thin like Sonam, you should not be wearing it as it can make you look hippy. Also the extremes of color on the salwaar, kameez and dupatta can stunt you (visually). Women who are 5'4" or less should try to stick with wearing the salwaar and kurta in the same color to give the illusion of height.

On the whole I love how she looks and I love that she does not play safe and has fun with her clothes.

Who wore it Better?

Unlike most of the other women at the Awards show, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan wore a chudidar kurta. Interestingly, the outfit looks very similar to the one that Twinkle wore to one of the CC2C premiers.

Which one do you prefer? For me, it is Twinkle. Love the color of the outfit and the darker green edging to the dupatta ( I totally don't like the chamki gold on Ash's). Also I love the copper clutch that Twinkle carried. I am getting a little tired of Ash's carrying the crystal Lieber clutch with most of her Indian outfits.

Whose outfit do you like better. Post a comment below
